drappus GmbH was founded in the spring of 2016. The company name drappus is an acronym for "drangmeister application programming, products and (und) systems"—etymologically, the word drappus refers to the Medieval Latin drappus (cloth) and the French draper (to arrange artfully in folds), thus expressing a creative claim. A key business objective is therefore the creation of algorithms and products for 3D modeling of objects on the basis of "standard" smartphone hardware and software equipment—in other words, photogrammetric 3D modeling in the sense of "Augmented Reality" for everyone and at any time. Previously carried out marketing studies have identified an accessible economic potential in this area, and initial implementations have confirmed the feasibility of such an approach. For the insights obtained so far, see: FieldsOfWork.
The before mentioned term "Augmented Reality", or AR for short, describes the enhancement of 3D modeled objects with additional information. However, the term "Augmented Reality" is more or less also a marketing neologism, and marketing must constantly reinvent itself—if necessary, pouring old wine into new bottles. So, while the terms "Augmented Reality" (AR), "Virtual Reality" (VR), and "Mixed Reality" (MR) have been around for some time, recently in some advertising brochures and in the Wikipedia the alleged superordinate term "Extended Reality" (XR) appeared. It remains to be seen to what extent it will still be possible to distinguish between the above terms within the spectrum of the "Reality-Virtuality Continuum."
